What the data tells us
Review volume tells a clear story about where Australians and international visitors actually spend their time. The top of the ranking is dominated by free, centrally located icons — places like Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour and Queen Victoria Market — because accessibility drives foot traffic, and foot traffic drives reviews. Paid attractions rank highly only when they deliver an experience visitors feel compelled to recommend.
At state level, New South Wales accounts for 472,937 reviews — 33% of all landmark reviews in the country — reflecting both its population share and the drawing power of Sydney's harbour precinct. But the highest average ratings tell a different story: smaller states and regional landmarks often outscore the famous icons, suggesting that Australia's most-loved experiences are not always its most visited.
The category breakdown reinforces this. Everyday, open-access landmarks — lookouts, beaches, parks and historic sites — accumulate reviews steadily year-round, while ticketed museums and galleries spike around school holidays and major exhibitions. For travellers, the practical takeaway is simple: the landmarks with the highest ratings relative to their review counts are often the quiet achievers worth detouring for.
Methodology
Source: public Google Maps ratings and review counts for 489 landmarks across all 8 Australian states and territories, collected via automated scraping in October 2026.
Metric: total review count is used as a proxy for visitor popularity. It correlates with, but is not identical to, physical visitor numbers — official attendance figures are published by only a minority of landmarks.
Scope: landmarks were selected from Google Maps category data for tourist attractions, historical landmarks, museums, lookouts, lighthouses, monuments and related categories. Coverage is weighted towards metropolitan areas; regional coverage expands with each data refresh.
Refresh: this dataset is re-collected periodically. Figures on this page reflect the October 2026 collection.
